Week 4, Thing 9 RSS feeds

In this exercise, I like having my own feeds that I can check at my leisure. It's like scanning the morning newspaper. One feed that will be useful for library programing is the Library Internet Index. Right away I found something from Family Fun on Valentine programming.

One for personal (as well as work use) I'm enthused about is: (Full Text!!)
History of the Civil War, 1861-1865 view more info comment email item
The full text of the 1918 Pulitzer Prize-winning book by historian James Ford Rhodes. This "chronicle of the War Between the States both provides the general reader with a clearly written description of the events of four bloody years as well as reveals the self-educated author's belief in the war's cause as the evil of slavery."

Week 4, Thing 8 Boing-boing

I was exploringBoing-Boing from Bloglines and found this story from a BBC newsreporter.

This "Bibliomula" travels the the foothills of the Andes in Venezuela to encourage reading among the children. This day, posted August 4, 2007, the bibliomula made a stop for 23 children. The children checkbooks and "librarians" read to the children. They also bring along laptops. With the gas situation so bad, maybe FCPL could try this method instead of the bookmobile!

Thing 7, Week 3 - Technology Related

I like the self scanning technology used at the grocery stores. The one at Weis Market on Old Camp Road is one of the best in Frederick. I'm in and out of there in no time, even with a full cart. However, I can't say the same for the Home Depot on Route 40. The light above is always flashing and the automated voice is always yakking about something!

7 1/2 Steps to Learning

The easiest steps for me are taking responsibility for my own learning and teaching/mentoring others. Teaching goes on every work day at the library with something as small as showing a patron how to get to the catalogue online and search for books. When I'm not at the library, I work for Frederick County Adult Ed as a tutor for adults studying for their high school diploma. I would say the hardest step for me is to take the time to set goals.
